I have felt a strong sense to build things. A stirring, if you will, to create things that I haven't done yet or have been too intimidated to try. But that intimidation has not deterred me. I hope it's not deterring you either.
When I look at the scriptures, I see countless builders, men and women that God has instructed to build/create things for His purposes on the Earth. Noah with the ark (Genesis 6:9-22), Solomon with building God's temple (1 Kings 5:1-5), Nehemiah rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 1-6), Jesus! The Son of God Himself had an occupation as a carpenter while He was on Earth. The disciples were given the task of building the Kingdom of God by leading more people to Jesus, (That commission still applies to us today, by the way, “Go make disciples…” Matthew 28:19-20, aka Build God's kingdom!).
What is God asking you to build? What are the gifts, skills, or training that God has placed within you in? Are there problems on the Earth that are catching your eye? Things that bother you? Have you considered that the things that rub you wrong might be an invitation from God to you to build/create a solution to that problem? I will say, it's a lot easier to complain about a problem instead of asking God if you carry the solution to that problem.
Nehemiah felt a burden for the Israelites and for rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. He knew what the problems were. So what did he do with that burden? He sought God first--very important! Before we set out to build anything for God, please make sure it's something God actually wants you to do. Nothing is worse than building “something for God,” but His hand of favor, (God's approval) isn't on it. For example, King David had a desire to build God's temple, but God chose his son, Solomon, to build it instead, (2 Samuel 7:1-7; 1 Kings 5:1-5).
An added bonus, is having others who have share a similar vision, building alongside of you! For Nehemiah, when he shared his heart for rebuilding the walls, the Israelites in Jerusalem joined in his vision (Nehemiah 2:11-18), and they were able to build in an accelerated time that would've taken Nehemiah a long time to do by himself. When there are people who have gone ahead of you in the path you feel God is leading you in, I encourage you to seek out those people for the wisdom that they carry. If God is leading you to write a book, start a nonprofit, start a for profit business, create a website, etc. ask God to bring you into contact with believers who have already forged that path. They can help you avoid the mistakes they've made and instruct you in how God has guided them in their process.
Another thing to be mindful of, is who you allow to join in with you on the building. It matters who you allow to build with you. There will be naysayers, even those who don't fully understand what God has given you who can intentionally or unintentionally dismantle the things God has asked you to build. Take Sanballat, Tobiah, and Gehsem for example, who were constantly trying to discourage and intimidate Nehemiah and the Israelites as they were rebuilding Jerusalem's walls, (Nehemiah is just a really good book in the Bible to read when it comes to building Lol!).
One more nugget of wisdom I can share, once you've gone to God in prayer, received His favor for what He's put on your heart to do, gathered your wisdom for experienced counsel, and take inventory of those who can build with you, is to learn the art of building in silence. In our world today, it's so easy to share things prematurely. It's tempting to want to prove yourself; to look for validation in what you're building. And sometimes, depending on who you're sharing with, it can be a good thing, but let the finished work speak for itself. When a cake is baking in the oven, it cooks in silence--hidden from the outside. Eventually, it rises, and when it's time to pull the cake out, you see the finished work.
I'm excited to see all of the things God call us to build in the remainder of this year! Stay faithful and in tune with Him, find the right people who can help you build the vision, and whatever you build, may it bring people closer to God and draw them to His Kingdom above all else.
