There's been such an emphasis of words to me this year. From the summer of 2025 to now, I feel like the Lord has been showing me how important the things we say are. In Proverbs 18:21 NLT it says, “ Life and death are in the power of the tongue; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.” It's funny because when we think of reaping and sowing like in Galatians 6:9, we tend to think more about our actions; not so much the words that come out of our mouths. But worlds are created by the things we speak, and honestly, I didn't think much about this until I got a little older. We should look no further than to our Creator Himself! In Genesis chapter 1, God is creating, not only the world we walk on, but the whole universe! In verses 3, 9, 11, 14, 20, 24, and 26, God spoke everything into existence, (notice that what God was speaking, He was speaking life) death had not been an option. Not even a thought! In verse 26 of that same chapter, God spoke about us, making us in His own image, “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth on the earth.” Did you ever think that when the Triune God decided to make us in his image, that He included giving us the ability to speak life and death in our own lives?
It's a mind boggling concept! And also at the same time, should make us mindful in the things that we say about ourselves and to each other. How does this tie into worship you might ask? Well, I'll be happy to tell you! It's so easy to come to a Sunday service and just sing the words that appear on the screen without paying attention to the words we're singing. Take the hymn, “I Surrender All,” for example. When we sing the lyrics to that song do we really mean them? Or is it just easy to sing something because other people are singing them and it's tradition to sing along with our congregations? The songs are still words that come out of our mouths, but how powerful the become when we truly sing them like we mean them? Tomorrow, when you pray, ask the Lord to help you to speak life with the words you speak. On Sunday, when you're in church, truly listen to the songs sung. And then sing them with conviction and life! See how God uses the words you speak, you sing to change things and people around you!
